Hikes

Season: spring – autumn

Sněžka via the quieter route with views

From Chalupa Na hráni, follow the paths past the little chapel to Bouda Jana and on towards Portášky. The trail climbs towards Růžohorky, where you can stop for refreshments at Děčínská bouda, the highest mountain farm in the Krkonoše. At Růžohorky you have a choice: continue on foot to Sněžka, take the cable car up from Růžová hora, or descend via the green trail to Pec pod Sněžkou. The route runs through a quieter part of the mountains and offers beautiful views.

Family tip

Kids will love a stop at the Pecka Adventure Playground — a natural playground with giant wooden climbing frames and popular marble runs.

Take the bus from the Velká Úpa, náměstí stop into the centre of Pec. Spend the morning on kid-friendly attractions — near the Pec dam you'll find a toboggan run, the Lemurie children's park and the Monkey Park rope centre. After lunch, head to the lower station of the Sněžka cable car, where kids can try the Marble Run game. Ride up in the afternoon, when queues tend to be shorter. Walk back to Velká Úpa via Růžohorky, the Pecka Adventure Playground at Portášky and past Bouda Jana and the chapel, straight to the cottage.

Family tip

All the attractions in Pec are close together, so you avoid long transfers — ideal for families with young children.

Černá hora via the Černohorské rašeliniště bog back to Velká Úpa

Take the bus from Velká Úpa, náměstí towards Vrchlabí and get off at Janské Lázně, Zátiší. Walk to the lower station of the Černohorský Express cable car and ride up to Černá hora. At the top, visit the Panorama lookout tower and the Kabinka children's park. Then continue to the Černohorské rašeliniště peat bog with its nature trail, and choose a route to Pec or Velká Úpa via Pěticestí and Vlašské boudy. From Vlašské boudy, descend either the more adventurous way past the waterfalls in Javoří důl, or the easier way along the road. On the way down, you'll spot Chalupa Na hráni on the sunny hillside.

Family tip

Children with a valid cable car ticket get free entry to the Kabinka children's park — seven attractions right by the upper station.

A fairy-tale trip to Malá Úpa

Take the bus to Horní Malá Úpa, where you can visit a craft workshop, the well-known Trautenberk Brewery with its restaurant, and set off on the Fairy Tale Trail. The trail is a loop, so once you're done you can take the bus back to Velká Úpa. Alternatively, branch off near U kostela, continue via Spálený Mlýn and climb up to Bouda Jana. From there, a pleasant forest path leads straight to Chalupa Na hráni.

Family tip

You can keep it easy with a bus ride back, or extend the day with a scenic walk through the countryside of Malá and Velká Úpa.

Rainy day: fairy-tale exhibition, the Bosorka workshop and indoor minigolf

Even a rainy day doesn't have to mean staying in. In Svoboda nad Úpou, visit the Fairy Tale Exhibition and play a round of indoor minigolf right next door. Nearby you'll find a restaurant serving pizza or burgers. Janské Lázně offers more: at the Bosorka craft workshop kids can make something of their own, then take a stroll along the spa colonnade and finish with a warm spa wafer.

Family tip

Check the Bosorka workshop's current opening hours before you go — some activities need to be booked in advance.

Rainy day: thermal baths and the aquapark in Jelenia Góra

Make the most of a rainy day with a trip to Jelenia Góra in Poland, home to the Termy Cieplickie thermal baths. The aquapark uses local thermal water and offers recreational and sports pools, slides, a pontoon slide, a lazy river, a water swing, massage jets and jacuzzis. Adults will enjoy the quieter spa section with saunas, a tepidarium, a snow cave, an ice fountain and a relaxation zone. It's best to check tickets and opening hours in advance. After swimming, the historic centre of Jelenia Góra is well worth a visit.

Family tip

The baths are open daily 8:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m., but weekends and holidays can get busy — we recommend booking tickets online.

Winter trips

Season: winter

The highest-altitude ice rink in Czechia

Horní Malá Úpa is home to the highest-altitude ice rink in Czechia. Skates can be rented on site, so all you need is warm clothing and a taste for winter fun. You can also drive there, though parking in Horní Malá Úpa can be tricky in winter. Taking the bus both ways is the more comfortable option. Check the current opening hours of the rink, the skate rental and the bus connection before you go.

Family tip

For families with children, the bus is often more convenient — no need to worry about winter tyres, snow chains or parking on narrow roads.

Toboggan run and evening tobogganing at Javor

From Velká Úpa, take the free bus or ski bus into the centre of Pec. During the day, visit Relaxpark with its 900-metre toboggan run, where you can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h. Right next door is the CrêPec pancake stand. After dark, head to LIVE Park Javor, about a ten-minute walk from the centre of Pec. For evening tobogganing, a covered moving carpet lights up and carries you and your toboggan back to the top. At the SkiResort Live office you can borrow seat pads, rings, sledges, zipfys or ski-bobs for free. Evening tobogganing only runs on selected days, usually alongside night skiing at Javor.

Family tip

Classic sledges aren't allowed, but your own toboggan is fine. Check the evening bus or ski bus connection back to Velká Úpa before you go.

Trips further afield

Adršpach-Teplice Rocks (national nature reserve)

One of the largest and best-known sandstone rock cities in Europe. The national nature reserve offers circular trails of varying length and difficulty, picturesque lakes, narrow rock passages and viewpoints. The trails are suitable for families with children — younger kids especially enjoy the easier loops around the lakes.

Family tip

The reserve gets very busy in high season — arrive in the morning to enjoy a quieter walk through the rock city.

Kuks Hospital (UNESCO)

A baroque spa complex near Dvůr Králové featuring unique sculptures by Matyáš Braun, including his famous Virtues and Vices. Kuks is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site offers tours of the hospital, a pharmacy exhibition, gardens and, in season, cultural events. Combine your visit with a walk along the Elbe.

Family tip

Kids will enjoy the pharmacy with its historic preparations, plus the outdoor grounds where they can run around freely.

Dvůr Králové Safari Park

The largest safari park in Central Europe. Here you'll see African savanna animals in spacious enclosures and paddocks — you can walk through, drive your own car, or take a special safari jeep tour. The park also has an African village, playgrounds, food stalls and, in season, a lakeside beach. It's renowned for breeding rhinos and other endangered species.

Family tip

It's worth booking the safari jeep tour in advance, especially on weekends and holidays. Younger kids will also love the African village and climbing frames.
